Tricolored Heron, Swallow-tailed Kite, Mississippi Kite, Purple Gallinule, Chuck-will’s-widow, Acadian Flycatcher, Prothonotary Warbler, Swainson’s Warbler.

Boneyard Lake is a semi-forested oxbow lake with a major heron and ibis roost and rookery. Nesting Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Little Blue Heron, Cattle Egret and White Ibis are all numerous.  There are also several pairs of Tricolored Heron. Activity may start as early as late March. Other nesting species in the area include Wood Duck, Anhinga,  Purple Gallinule, a very large population of Red-headed Woodpeckers, and in the surrounding bottomlands, Prothonotary Warbler, Swainson’s Warbler and Yellow-throated Warbler. Visiting Wood Stork begin to arrive as early as mid June, some from nesting colonies in Georgia and Florida, others from as far away as southern Mexico and Belize. Contact the Pascagoula River Audubon Center at 228-475-0825 for information regarding guided trips to this site. You may also want to consider bringing a canoe or kayak to explore the lake and surrounding waterways. This site is recognized by the National Audubon Society as an Important Bird Area (IBA). This area is a state Wildlife Management Area (WMA) managed by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries & Parks (MS WF&P). The primary purposes of WMAs are to provide areas for hunting and fishing. For your own safety, wear highly visible blaze orange hunting clothes during hunting seasons. A WMA User Permit is required to legally access this and other WMA sites. Resident and non-resident annual and daily permits are available. The map shows the entrance to Boneyard Lake, but the rookery site is located further down Boneyard lake road headed southeast on the right.
